Spartans Waste Little Time in Rolling to 47-7 Victory

Marcus Arroyo threw for three touchdowns, including two to Rashied Davis, and the San Jose State defense took over from there in a 47-7 rout of Southern Utah.

Davis and Arroyo hooked up seven times for 133 yards in the Spartans’ 40-27 upset victory over Stanford the previous week and it did not take long for the two to get rolling on Saturday night.

With 11:11 remaining in the first quarter, Arroyo fired a 21-yard strike to Davis for a 7-0 lead.

Deonce Whitaker capped a 12-play, 80-yard drive with a one-yard scoring run to give the Spartans (2-1) a 14-0 lead.

San Jose State scored on its third consecutive possession as Arroyo found Jarmar Julien for a 17-yard scoring pass and a 21-0 lead.

The Arroyo-Davis combination were at it again in the second half, this time on a 55-yard touchdown pass on San Jose State’s first offensive play of the third quarter.

Southern Utah (1-2) gained 296 yards in 62 carries, but Matt Cannon was held to only 86 yards passing. Charles Henderson threw an interception on his only attempt and it was returned by Patrick Battle for an 18-yard touchdown.

The Spartans had only six interceptions in 1999 and already has five. They went almost four years without an interception returned for a touchdown, but they have returned one in each of the last two games.

San Jose State has scored at least 40 points in each of its last two games.
