City Zip’s Streak Hits a Bump

City Zip, considered one of the best 2-year-olds in the country, finished first Sunday for the fifth consecutive race, but his winning streak still ended at Belmont Park.

A nose better than Burning Roma at the wire of the $200,000 Belmont Futurity, City Zip came out and bumped his rival near the finish line. The Belmont stewards disqualified the winner and reversed the order. Burning Roma, a 17-1 shot, was moved up to first, and remained undefeated.

Neither City Zip’s trainer, Linda Rice, nor the colt’s jockey, Jose Santos, disagreed with the stewards’ decision.

“I simply hit him too hard [with the whip] and he drifted out,” Santos said.

Burning Roma was ridden by Rick Wilson for trainer Anthony Dutrow.

Raging Fever won Belmont’s stake for 2-year-old fillies, the $200,000 Matron, beating Dancinginmydreams by a head.

Raging Fever, ridden by Jerry Bailey and trained by Mark Hennig, is undefeated in four starts.

There’s a chance that Fusaichi Pegasus might return to the races Saturday at Belmont.

After the Kentucky Derby winner worked seven furlongs in 1:28 1/5 at Belmont Sunday, trainer Neil Drysdale suggested that the $150,000 Jerome Handicap, a mile race, is a possibility.

“It will depend on the weather and how he comes out of the work,” Drysdale said.

Heavy favorite Feverish was a convincing winner in the $50,000 E.B. Johnston Stakes at Fairplex Park.

Feverish, ridden by Frank Alvarado for trainer Dan Hendricks and owners Marty and Pam Wygod, also won the Johnston last year and is now undefeated in three starts at the Pomona track.
