Man Arrested in Shootout With Officers

A man was booked on suspicion of attempted murder after a shootout late Sunday that left two police officers--and himself--with gunshot wounds.

Andrew W. Johns, 44, was arrested a short distance from where officers had been fired on after responding to a routine call outside a northwest Pasadena apartment complex.

Officer Ernesto Estrada was wounded in the thigh and Officer John Calderon suffered a graze wound to the face, Pasadena Police Cmdr. Mary Schander said. Both officers were treated at Huntington Memorial Hospital and released, she said.

Johns was treated at Huntington for an injury that is not life-threatening and is expected to soon be transferred to the custody of police, she said.

The officers went to the 100 block of West Hammond Street shortly before 11 p.m. after a 911 caller complained that a group of men were outside, either gambling or involved in possible drug sales.

The pair pulled their patrol car into the driveway of the apartment complex and ordered two suspects, who were walking away, to stop, police said.

At that point, Johns allegedly turned around and fired shots at both officers, police said. The officers returned fire, injuring Johns.

Estrada, 33, recently joined the department from the Orange County Sheriff’s Department. Calderon, 29, is an eight-year veteran.
