A Utah player was arrested on charges of breaking a baseball bat over the head of a teenager, sending him to the hospital with serious head injuries.

Defensive end Sean Patrick O’Keefe was immediately suspended after being booked into the Salt Lake County Adult Detention Complex on Monday. The freshman walk-on was being held without bail on suspicion of aggravated assault.

Linebacker Corey Dodds also was suspended because the school received information he was involved in the beating, school spokeswoman Liz Abel said.

A Salt Lake City Police Department spokesman said the arrest stemmed from a fight at a weekend party where police said O’Keefe broke a the bat over a 17-year-old boy’s head. The boy, who was not identified by police, remained hospitalized Monday.

Bobby Gaston, the Southeastern Conference chief of officials, said that line judge Al Matthews was in the right spot to make the call when he allowed Florida’s late touchdown to stand in the Gators’ victory over Tennessee, but he wouldn’t say whether the play was indeed a catch. . . . Even though his Gators won, Coach Steve Spurrier was upset with Jabar Gaffney’s throat-slashing gesture after his controversial game-winning catch and said he might take disciplinary action against the receiver. “That was embarrassing for all of us, the whole team, for him, his parents, his teammates, his university,” Spurrier said. . . . Standout Mississippi running back Deuce McAllister sprained his right shoulder against Vanderbilt and might return for the Rebels’ game against Kentucky on Sept. 30.
