Nan, Ju Take Victory in All-Chinese Final

Chinese top seeds Wang Nan and Li Ju won gold in women’s table tennis, sweeping aside compatriots Sun Jin and Yang Yin, 21-18, 21-11, 21-11, in the final.

In a tense bronze-medal match, Kim Moo-kyo and Ryu Ji-hye of South Korea defeated Hungarians Csilla Batorfi and Krisztina Toth, 21-18, 21-19, 22-24, 19-21, 21-19.

The South Koreans looked unstoppable after winning the first two games but the Hungarians fought back to take them to a deciding game.

Friday’s encounter was the third consecutive all-Chinese final in the event and both Wang and Li have also qualified for the semifinals of the singles competition.

In the men’s singles quarterfinals, Liu Guoliang of China beat Germany’s Joerg Rosskopf, 21-11, 21-14, 21-7, to advance to semifinals against Sweden’s Jan-Ove Waldner.

Waldner overcame Vladimir Samsonev of Belarus, 20-22, 18-21, 21-14, 21-18, 21-19.

Kong Lighhui of China beat Werner Sclager of Austria, 21-14, 13-21, 20-22, 21-10, 21-14, in another quarterfinal while Joergen Persson of Sweden beat Liu Guozheng of China, 14-21, 21-18, 21-16, 21-19, in the other.

In the first women’s semifinal, Wang Nan of China beat Chen Jing of Taipei, 12-21, 22-20, 21-17, 21-15. The other semifinal was played later.
