Schools Receive Blue Ribbon Awards

They didn’t get to meet the president, but they took home lifelong memories and prestigious Blue Ribbon awards.

Officials from Valley View Middle School in Simi Valley and Redwood Middle School in Thousand Oaks picked up the awards last weekend in Washington.

Valley View and Redwood were the only schools in Ventura County to win the Blue Ribbon awards, which are handed out annually to a select number of schools by the Department of Education.

Some of the educators were scheduled to meet with President Clinton, but he was forced to cancel. Instead, they received their awards and Blue Ribbon flags from Secretary of Education Richard Riley.

“We had a fabulous time,” said Jan Britz, principal of Simi Valley High School and former principal of Valley View.

“The one good thing about these programs is it gives you a real shot in the arm of motivation. You’re completely overwhelmed with pride in being an educator,” Britz said. “It will be an experience we’ll never forget.”
