Matter Stands, Delivers for Hart

It’s amazing what Kyle Matter can do when he isn’t spending most of the game on his back.

Playing behind a revamped offensive line Thursday night, Matter passed for 352 yards to rally Hart High to a 35-9 nonleague victory over Palmdale at College of the Canyons.

“It’s nice to have time to throw,” said Matter, who had been sacked 20 times in his previous two games. “I was given all the time I needed.”

Matter, who was sacked three times, completed 24 of 36 passes, including touchdowns of 17 yards to Chris Steck and 44 yards to Keith Howell. Kevin Donoho had five receptions for 120 yards.

Palmdale (2-1-1) converted two early Hart turnovers into a 9-7 lead before falling to the Indians (3-1) for the 11th consecutive time.

Terry Furlow of Palmdale completed 15 of 31 passes for 115 yards and two interceptions, and rushed for 80 yards in 12 carries, including a 16-yard touchdown.

He struggled against Hart’s imposing defensive line. Evan Allen deflected four passes, including one that bounced to Todd Wilson for an interception. Kyle Hollis also had an interception.

Defensive lineman Peter Dubsky, playing fullback, scored twice on two-yard runs for Hart, which outgained Palmdale, 448-219, including a 240-72 advantage in the second half.

“We’re happy, but we’re still not where we want to be,” said Hart Coach Mike Herrington, whose team lost last week to Westlake to end a 25-game winning streak.
