FRESHWATER

LOS ANGELES COUNTY

CASTAIC LAKE--Largemouth bass are striking top-water lures early and waterdogs and live shad during the day. Matt DiGiucio, Castaic, reeled in 10-pound, 5-ounce bass on a Zara Spook from shore. Some striped bass and bluegill.

PYRAMID LAKE--Catfish are biting well on cut baits, and largemouth bass are patrolling the points, striking mostly crankbaits.

VENTURA COUNTY

CASITAS LAKE--Trout remain the best bet and some of the fish are plump. They’re biting mostly on Power Bait dropped to 50 feet off the dam. Top catfish was a 17-pounder by Ron Adams, Culver City, on mackerel at Deep Cat. Largemouth bass are rising at dawn and sinking out during the day. An eight-pounder caught on a plastic worm tops the list.

LAKE PIRU--Bass fishing is slow to fair, but it’s the best thing going. Night crawlers and small plastic worms are getting attacked at five to 15 feet, mostly within the coves.

SANTA BARBARA COUNTY

LAKE CACHUMA--Trout action has picked up some, and trollers using Needlefish and lead-core line at eight or nine colors are getting most. Bass are striking top-water lures early and spinnerbaits and crankbaits during the day.

ORANGE COUNTY

ANAHEIM LAKE--Catfish action dipped slightly early in in the week, but plenty are being caught on mackerel and M&Ms; (marshmallows-and-mealworm combos). Fishing is generally good.

IRVINE LAKE--A 70-pound catfish was caught by Ronson Smothers, Los Angeles, on mackerel. His stringer weighed in at 100 pounds, 5 ounces. Largemouth bass are biting on white and black crankbaits, mostly at dusk along the cliffs. Crappie are striking white and yellow mini-jigs.

LAGUNA NIGUEL LAKE--Catfish action is good and beginning Sunday there is no limit on how many you can take home. A 10-pound, 1-ounce bass was caught on a six-inch blue plastic worm, and a 7-pound, 3-ounce bass was caught on a spinnerbait. Crappie and bluegill are biting too.

SAN BERNARDINO COUNTY

GREEN VALLEY LAKE--Brandon Validiva, Santa Ana, caught an 8-pound trout on a night crawler. A 5-pound, 8-ounce trout was caught on a silver Kastmaster.

JESS RANCH LAKES--Trout and bass are biting sporadically, and catfish anglers are doing well using trout guts.

RIVERSIDE COUNTY

CORONA LAKE--A 46-pound, 9-ounce catfish won a recent derby and fishing is generally good.

LAKE PERRIS--Top bass was a 12-pounder by Kao Vang, Moreno Valley, on a crawdad at Marina Point. A 10-pound, 4-ounce bass was caught on a six-inch Green Weenie. A 2-pound, 4-ounce bluegill was caught on a waxworm.

LAKE SKINNER--Largemouth bass and catfish are the best bets and fishing is fair for both. Top bass was a 4-pounder caught on a night crawler. A few striped bass are being caught daily.

SAN DIEGO COUNTY

LAKE CUYAMACA--A 4-pound, 8-ounce rainbow tops the list, but fishing has been slow and only began to pick up (slightly) at mid-week.

DIXON LAKE--Catfish and bluegill are providing fair action, but anglers here are eagerly awaiting the fall trout season.

SAN DIEGO CITY LAKES--San Vicente, El Capitan and Lower Otay are fair for bass, though the bigger fish are avoiding the hooks. Bluegill action is fair at Otay and San Vicente. Miramar closes to fishing and boating at dusk Sunday.

LAKE POWAY--A 10-pound bass (plastic worm) and 16-pound catfish (mackerel) highlight slow to fair bites for both species.

EASTERN SIERRA

The Bishop area lakes are producing well, Bishop Creek is yielding a few lunker rainbows and lots of small browns (on crickets), and the Lower Owens flow is low enough to make for some good conditions. Crowds are way down and fishing is generally good. In the Mammoth Lakes area, DFG broodstock were planted in several waters and fishing is generally good throughout the region. An 8-pound, 12-ounce rainbow was caught on a white Trout Teaser at Convict. On the June Lake Loop, fishing isn’t great but it’s not bad for those using Power Bait and trolling small brown trout-pattern Rapalas. Top haul was a 13-pound, 12-ounce stringer, topped by a 5-pound, 4-ounce, fooled by worm-Power Bait combos. In the Bridgeport area, an 8-pound rainbow was nabbed with a night crawler at Big Virginia. The East and West Walker rivers remain productive.

SALTWATER

MORRO BAY (Virg’s Landing)--59 anglers (3 boats): 58 albacore, 5 ling cod, 30 red rock cod, 20 rock cod, 103 rockfish.

PORT SAN LUIS (Patriot Sportfishing)--30 anglers (2 boats): 17 red rock cod, 89 bolina, 3 ling cod, 14 albacore, 4 red snapper.

OXNARD (Cisco’s)--83 anglers (5 boats): 33 white sea bass, 79 yellowtail, 1 cabezon, 89 whitefish, 3 sheephead, 20 sculpin, 20 rockdish, 126 calico bass.

PORT HUENEME--60 anglers (3 boats): 6 white sea bass, 133 yellowtail, 132 calico bass, 6 sheephead, 14 rockfish, 9 sand bass, 36 whitefish.

MARINA DEL REY--45 anglers (4 boats): 94 calico bass, 284 sculpin, 6 halibut, 17 sand bass, 1 cabezon.

REDONDO BEACH--36 anglers (3 boats): 1 yellowtail, 29 calico bass, 3 sand bass, 21 bonito, 210 sculpin, 5 whitefish, 11 blue perch, 10 red snapper.

SAN PEDRO (L.A. Harbor Sportfishing)--9 anglers (1 boat): 18 yellowfin, 2 dorado. (22nd St. Landing)--78 anglers (3 boats): 34 yellowfin, 25 yellowtail, 21 calico bass, 1 barracuda, 113 whitefish, 21 rockfish, 1 bonito.

LONG BEACH (Sportfishing/Berth 55)-- 35 anglers (2 boats): 4 yellowtail, 3 barracuda, 93 calico bass, 66 rockfish, 33 whitefish, 50 sheephead, 2 sculpin, 1 ling cod, 4 blue perch. (Marina Sportfishing)--22 anglers (1 boat): 50 rockfish, 5 whitefish, 1 sculpin, 66 salmon grouper, 34 red snapper. (Belmont Pier)--8 anglers (1 boat): 35 calico bass, 10 mackerel, 30 sand bass, 13 sculpin.
