Sonora Makes Most of Mayfield

Sonora overcame its consistently sloppy play to remain unbeaten with a 28-21 nonleague victory over Century Thursday at Santa Ana Stadium.

Running back David Mayfield rushed for 184 yards and four touchdowns for the Raiders, but Sonora committed four turnovers and failed to convert three PATs.

It took Mayfield’s 36-yard touchdown run with 3 minutes 24 seconds left to put this one away. Another 38-yard run on the five-play, 53-yard drive was called back because of a holding penalty.

Mayfield’s 13-yard run with 7:52 remaining gave the Raiders (4-0) their first lead, 22-21.

The Centurions (1-3) held a 21-7 halftime lead but couldn’t move the ball in the second half.

Victor Leite got Century off and running, breaking through several tackles at the line of scrimmage, then going 78 yards for a touchdown on the game’s third play.

Sonora marched from its 30 to the Century one several minutes later, but Mayfield fumbled and Century’s Celestino Johnson picked up the ball and ran 99 yards for a score.

Mayfield scored from four yards out with 3:23 left in the first quarter.

Alex Gutierrez’s interception gave Century good field position at its own 43 yard, and 10 plays later Leite went around right end on a 16-yard touchdown run.
