Kopp’s Condition Upgraded in Canada

Troy Kopp, a former Mission Viejo High School quarterback, was listed in critical-but-stable condition at Calgary’s Foothills Hospital Thursday, a day after suffering injuries in a car accident.

Patti Grier, a hospital spokesperson, said Kopp’s condition was upgraded from critical this morning. Kopp’s family has requested no information regarding his injuries be released.

Kopp, 29, who graduated from Mission Viejo in 1989, was alone in his car heading west outside of Golden, which is about 170 miles west of Calgary, at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday. According to Royal Canadian Mounted Police officials, he was attempting to pass a truck on the gravel shoulder when he lost control and crossed the center line. His car struck an east-bound truck, then was hit by the truck he was trying to pass.

Neither of the other drivers was injured.

Officials are still investigating the cause of the accident.

Kopp attended University of the Pacific, where he set school and NCAA passing records. He bounced around the Arena Football League, playing for several teams. He was signed by the San Diego Chargers in 1998, but was cut during training camp.

Kopp played for the Calgary Stampeders of the Canadian football League this season, but was recently released.
