Titans Blank 49ers in Softball

Jodie Cox pitched a one-hitter and recorded her second shutout in two days, leading Cal State Fullerton past Long Beach State, 1-0, in a Big West Conference softball game Monday at Long Beach.

Cox, who shut out the 49ers on three hits Sunday, took a no-hitter into the sixth before Jessica Smith singled. Cox (15-4) struck out six and walked four.

The Titans scored the game’s lone run in the top of the seventh when Yasmin Mossadeghi’s hard grounder got by Long Beach third baseman Christina Zepeda, scoring Julie Watson from second.

Freshman Lindsay Knoff (8-10) suffered the loss for Long Beach (17-22, 6-3).

With the three-game sweep of the 49ers--all shutouts--first-place Fullerton (36-10, 9-0) takes a one-game conference lead into this weekend’s games with second-place Pacific.

In Golden State Athletic Conference softball:

Biola 3-10, Vanguard 1-3--The Lions lost the first game when visiting Biola scored two ninth-inning runs, with Jessica Logsdon (18-3) earned the win. Nikki Benning had two hits and Celina Camarillo drove in Vanguard’s run.

Three pitchers endured Biola’s 13-hit assault in the second game, with Cheri Smith (4-2), who lasted 1 1/3 innings, suffering the loss. Camarillo was three for three for Vanguard (26-16, 7-7). Biola is 37-10, 10-4.
