Amritraj Advances in Easter Bowl

No. 4-seeded Prakash Amritraj of Encino defeated Sean Kelleher of Forty Fort, Pa., 6-2, 6-4, in a boys’ 18 division fourth-round match of the U.S. Tennis Assn. Easter Bowl Super National Spring Championships on Monday at the Riviera Resort and Racquet Club in Palm Springs.

Seventh-seeded Lester Cook of Sherman Oaks defeated defending Southern Section champion K.C. Corkery of Manhattan Beach, 7-6 (7-0), 1-6, 6-4, in a boys’ 18 match.

Tennis--Elizabeth Carpenter of Sierra Madre defeated Lauren Ritz of Thousand Oaks in the girls’ 14 division final of the Central California Classic Open Junior tournament in Bakersfield last week. The result was incorrectly reported in Tuesday’s edition.

Amritraj and Cook will play quarterfinal matches today.

Amritraj defeated Brian Morton of Costa Mesa, 6-3, 6-2, and Cook beat Daniel Haimovic of Mill Neck, N.Y., 6-4, 6-1, in third-round matches.

Amritraj also teamed with his cousin, Stephen Amritraj of Calabasas, to defeat Miami, Fla. residents Brent Saiontz and Evan Zeder, 6-4, 7-6 (7-5), in a fourth-round boys’ 18 doubles match.

In other third-round singles matches Sunday, Brian Wan of Woodbury, N.Y. defeated Stephen Amritraj, 6-2, 6-2, in the boys 18 division.

Adam Fass of Parkland, Fla. defeated Jamil Al-Agba of Ojai, 7-5, 6-4, in a boys’ 16 third-round match, and fourth-seeded Amber Liu of La Mesa defeated Brooke Borisoff of Agoura Hills, 6-0, 6-0, in the third round of girls’ 18 division play.

In girls’ 14 fourth-round play, Kewa Nichols of Amarillo, Texas, defeated Jessica Nguyen of Chatsworth, 7-6 (9-7), 1-6, 6-4, and Stephanie Kusano of Houston, Texas, defeated Celia Durkin of Woodland Hills, 3-6, 6-3, 6-4.

* Lauren Ritz of Thousand Oaks won the girls’ 14-and-under division final championship match of the 50th annual Central California Classic Open tournament that took place April 7-10 in Bakersfield.

Ritz, 11, and her sister Jenna Ritz, 10, also won the girls’ 12-and-under doubles title.

Drew Jacobs of Moorpark won the boys’ 12-and-under singles championship and John Tyler Sundling and Gregory Punsalan won the boys’ 12-and-under doubles title.

* Reseda High is holding a retirement party for Coach Joel Schaeffer on May 18 at 6:30 p.m. at Reseda. Schaeffer coached the Regents’ football team for 23 years and retired after last season.
