** 1/2 Various artists, “8Ball Presents the Slab,” 8ways/JCOR. Anchored by Houston-based rapper 8Ball, this 18-cut compilation (due in stores Tuesday) introduces a multitude of new talent, but it hits hardest when A-list stars grace the microphone. 8Ball’s partner MJG makes several strong appearances, and veterans Too $hort and E-40 add scorching lyrics to “Big Tric.” Lesser-known rappers fail to make a lasting impression, with the exception of Memphis’ Project Playaz, Tom Skee and DJ Squeeky.
