A man who barricaded himself in a Long Beach house with two girls, ages 7 and 10, was shot and killed by police Friday, authorities said. Five people, including three officers, were injured in the standoff.

The incident began shortly after 7:20 p.m. when the man, whom police did not identify, shot at an officer patrolling the area of 8th Street and Orange Avenue and wounded him in the cheek. The officer shot back and injured the suspect.

While the officer called for assistance, the man forced his way into a home in the 1000 block of Alamitos Avenue. The gunman shot a man in the house and barricaded himself inside, holding the two girls hostage. Nearby residents were evacuated to a temporary Red Cross shelter.

The five injured people were treated at hospitals and released, said Police Cpl. Jay Fogg.
