Bicyclist Dies From Injuries in Collision

A 34-year-old man who was struck by a car while bicycling Saturday died from his injuries, the Ventura County medicalexaminer’s office reported Tuesday.

Jesus Ricardo Rivera of the Northern California city of Oakley suffered blunt-force head and neck injuries and slipped into a coma, authorities said.

Rivera was pronounced dead at noon Sunday at a Ventura hospital. He was struck after veering into the path of a car about 8:30 a.m. Saturday on Telephone Road near Westinghouse Street, authorities said.

Driver Nicholas Charles Bishop, 21, of Port St. Lucie, Fla., swerved but could not avoid the collision, officials said. Bishop was not injured and will not be cited. Rivera was wearing a helmet, but it shattered on impact.

Funeral arrangements are being handled by a Northern California funeral home, said Armando Chavez, a deputy county coroner.
