* Schedule: Today-Sunday.

* Course: Sunningdale Golf Club (6,255 yards, par 72).

* Purse: $1.5 million. Winner’s share: $225,000.

* Television: ESPN (Today-Friday, 8-10 a.m.) and Ch. 7 (Saturday-Sunday, 10-11:30 a.m.).

* Last year: Sweden’s Sophie Gustafson won at Royal Birkdale, beating compatriot Liselotte Neumann, Americans Meg Mallon and Becky Iverson, and England’s Kirsty Taylor by two strokes.

* Last week: Dorothy Delasin successfully defended her Giant Eagle title, closing with a seven-under 65 for a one-stroke victory over Tammie Green. . . . Sweden’s Helen Alfredsson won the WPGA Championship of Europe by four strokes at Royal Porthcawl in Wales.

* Notes: The tournament was elevated to major status in September, replacing the defunct du Maurier Classic. Meg Mallon won the final du Maurier last year at Royal Ottawa in Alymar, Canada. . . . Two-time champion Karrie Webb is seeking her third consecutive victory in a major. . . . American Sherri Steinhauer won in 1998 and 1999. . . . The Wendy’s Championship for Children is next week in New Albany, Ohio.

* Purse: $4 million. Winner’s share: $720,000.

* Television: USA (Today-Friday, 4-6 p.m.) and Ch. 2 (Saturday, 1-3 p.m.; Sunday, noon-3 p.m.).

* Last year: South Africa’s Ernie Els tied Phil Mickelson’s 1997 tournament record of 48 points in the modified Stableford event. Mickelson was second, four points behind.

* Last week: David Gossett earned a PGA Tour card through 2003, beating Briny Baird by a stroke in the John Deere Classic. Gossett is the first player to win using a sponsor exemption since Tiger Woods in the 1996 Las Vegas Invitational.

* Notes: British Open champion David Duval is in the field. . . . The PGA Championship is Aug. 16-19 at Atlanta Athletic Club. . . . With three events left in the U.S. Ryder Cup points race, only Woods, Duval and Mickelson have wrapped up spots. Duval, Mickelson, Mark Calcavecchia (5th) and Stewart Cink (8th) are the only players in the top 11 in the field. . . . The Jack Nicklaus-designed course is 6,288 feet above sea level.

* Schedule: Friday-Sunday.

* Course: Meadow Brook Club (6,842 yards, par 72).

* Purse: $1.7 million. Winner’s share: $255,000.

* Television: PAX (Friday, 10 a.m.-noon) and CNBC (Saturday-Sunday, 3-5 p.m.).

* Last year: Bruce Fleisher successfully defended his title, opening with a course-record 63 en route to a tournament-record 18-under 198 total. Dana Quigley was second, two strokes back.

* Last week: Allen Doyle won the State Farm Senior Classic, beating Fleisher on the third hole of a playoff. . . . Australia’s Ian Stanley won the Senior British Open on the first hole of a playoff with New Zealand’s Bob Charles.

* Notes: Fleisher, the U.S. Senior Open winner, won his third straight Home Depot Invitational in May. He’s attempting to become the first touring pro to accomplish the feat in two tournaments in one season. . . . Meadow Brook winners George Archer, Lee Trevino and Gary Player are in the field along with younger stars Hale Irwin, Larry Nelson and Gil Morgan. . . . The 3M Championship is next week in Minneapolis.
