From Times Staff Reports

Sheriff’s deputies searched late into the night Monday for a 16-year-old hiker who became separated from his family Sunday in the San Bernardino National Forest.

The search for William Parven of Woodland Hills will resume at first light today, said San Bernadino County Sheriff’s Sgt. Mark Marnati.

Parven apparently had been hiking with his father and sister on San Gorgonio Mountain, a 12,000-foot peak near the southeast corner of the forest. The mountain is south of Big Bear Lake and north of Beaumont and Banning.

He was reported missing at 10 a.m. Monday, Sheriff’s Sgt. Frank Gonzalez said.

The teenager’s father also had been lost at one point, but both the father and the teenager’s sister were accounted for Monday evening, Gonzalez said.

Sheriff’s officials did not expect that the weather would pose a threat to Parven on Monday night, nor during the day.

“The boy is an experienced hiker, from what we understand,” Sgt. Stan Urban said. “How he’s equipped we don’t know.”

A command post for the search has been set up at Forest Falls, where the teenager’s family was awaiting word, Marnati said. Sheriff’s deputies, volunteers and U.S. forest rangers are expected to search the mountain on foot, horseback and from helicopters.
