From Times Staff Reports

The City Council rejected a proposal this week that would have changed the structure of Costa Mesa’s government.

On a 3-to-2 vote, the council rejected a plan that would have allowed the public to decide whether to create council districts, increase the number of council members from five to seven and have a publicly elected mayor.

The mayor is now chosen from among council members and serves a one-year term.
