Service to Commemorate Hiroshima Bombing

The United Church of Christ, Hollywood Independent Church and Mt. Hollywood Congregational Church will hold a service commemorating the 1945 bombing of Hiroshima at 10:30 a.m. Sunday.

During World War II, members of the Hollywood Independent Church, who were Japanese Americans, were forced into internment camps. During their incarceration, the Mt. Hollywood Congregational Church looked after homes and property belonging to the church members.

The event will include guest speaker Dr. James Yamazaki, author of “Children of the Atomic Bomb.” Yamazaki will discuss his work in Hiroshima and the effects of radiation and fallout on children.

EVENTS

St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Cathedral will host the third annual L.A. Greek Fest beginning at 5 p.m. Friday at 1324 S. Normandie Blvd., Los Angeles. The event will include a discussion of the significance of the olive, led by Father Paul Paris; live Greek music; and a traditional folk dance performance by the St. Sophia Greek Orthodox Church troupe. Event hours are 5 to 10 p.m. Friday, 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. next Saturday and 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Aug. 19. Admission is $3 for adults. Free for children younger than 12. (323) 737-2424.

WORKSHOP / CONFERENCE

Glendale Church of Religious Science will hold an “Empowering Prosperity” workshop from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Wednesday at 2146 E. Chevy Chase Drive. The Rev. Bonnie Rowsell will focus on managing money. The workshop is offered on a free-will-offering basis. Preregistration requested. (818) 244-8171.

CONCERTS

Patricia Hannifan will perform popular and classical piano music at 7 p.m. Sunday at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 9440 Balboa Blvd., Northridge. All free-will offerings will go to the Frontline Foundation, which provides daily meals for the hungry and the homeless. (818) 886-1324.

* St. James’ Church and Opera Pasadena will present a free concert featuring Broadway favorites plus highlights from Gilbert and Sullivan at 7 p.m. today in the parish hall of the church, 1325 Monterey Road, South Pasadena. PEOPLE

Rabbi Steven Carr Reuben has been elected president of the Board of Rabbis of Southern California. Reuben is currently senior rabbi of Kehillat Israel Reconstructionist Congregation in Pacific Palisades. Reuben also serves on the board of governors of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical College, Chrysalis, the I Have a Dream Foundation and the Global Children’s Organization. The Board of Rabbis of Southern California is an agency of the Jewish Federation of Greater Los Angeles and represents Conservative, Orthodox, Reconstructionist and Reform streams of Jewish life.
