The Ventura County Fire Department has dispatched 51 firefighters to aid crews battling wildfires in California and Nevada.
Local firefighters were sent to Placer, Mariposa and Fresno counties; the northeastern California community of Likely; the Lake Tahoe area; Sequoia National Forest; and Elko, Nev.
Sandi Wells, a spokeswoman for the Ventura County Fire Department, said that all Ventura County fire stations are fully staffed. A number of off-duty firefighters have been recalled to assist stations that were left short-handed, Wells said.
In all, 63 firefighters from area agencies--including Ventura city, Santa Barbara County and Montebello fire departments--are participating in the state’s “Master Mutual Aid Plan.” The program allocates firefighters to agencies that request assistance.
