Multiethnic Assembly Convenes in Kosovo

Under heavy guard, Kosovo’s first multiethnic legislative assembly in more than 12 years opened in hopes of bringing lasting peace to the volatile province.
The 120-member assembly brought together deputies from the majority ethnic Albanian population and lawmakers from other ethnic groups, including Serbs.
The deputies were chosen Nov. 17 in the first province-wide elections after mid-1999, when the U.N. started administering Kosovo, a province of Serbia, Yugoslavia’s main republic.
