A Better Way to Show Their Holiday Spirit

Share

In reading the article about gift baskets to studio executives, I felt frustrated and sad (“The Annoying Dance of the Studio Goody Baskets,” Dec. 17). Hundreds of dollars are being spent on something the recipient doesn’t really want when there are many people in need this holiday season.

Wouldn’t it be a wonderful gesture, and something so much more meaningful, if these dollars were donated to a charity instead? I hope that next year someone will give consideration to this option.

This year rather than show our gratitude by sending clients over-the-top goodie baskets that may never get cracked, we at Big Imagination Group decided to turn those unwanted calories into much needed contributions to those less fortunate.

We sent each of our clients a loaf of bread along with a letter saying we had made a donation in their name to Ocean Park Community Center, a Santa Monica network of shelters and services for victims of homelessness, poverty, mental illness and domestic violence.

The result: A check for more than $1,000 for the charity.

With many people facing a hungry Christmas this year, what was the point of that story? The entertainment executives quoted sounded ungrateful and ungracious about somebody else’s largess.
