What: “College GameDay”

Where: ESPN, Tuesday, 6:30 a.m.

“College GameDay” will be making its third appearance at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday. “GameDay” was there for a UCLA-Oregon game in 1998 and the 1997 Rose Bowl game between Michigan and Washington State.

But this is a little different. There is no game at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday.

The crew will be setting up in Lot H of the parking area well before the sun is up so they can go on the air at 6:30 a.m., which is 9:30 in the East.

Usually, the backdrop for “GameDay” is a horde of screaming fans. That won’t be the case Tuesday.

“It will be a different show,” coordinating producer Steve Vecchione said. “People are welcome to come out, but we’re not expecting much of a crowd.”

During the 90-minute show, there will be plenty of analysis of the remaining eight bowl games, including the four bowl championship series games. And Shelley Smith will provide live reports from the Rose Parade.

Also, there will be a variety of features. One will be about the Atom Bowl, played in Nagasaki, Japan, just months after the end of World War II. The game featured U.S. military personnel.

Another will be about how Nebraska coach Tom Osborne went for a two-point conversion at the 1984 Orange Bowl, costing his team a national championship. “I just assumed if you played for the national championship, you had to win,” Osborne said.

The “GameDay” crew will be back at the Rose Bowl for another show Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
