Eminem and Grammys

Re Geoff Boucher’s interesting article “Will the Real Slim Shady Show Up at Grammys?” (Jan. 23):

I found the quote by C. Michael Greene, president of the National Academy of Recording Arts & Sciences, very strange. As to whether Eminem was a sure-fire jackpot with viewers, he was reported as saying: “I think we would lose as many 34- to 54-year-old viewers in Dubuque and Ames, Iowa, as we will gain in a more hipper audience.”

Does Greene think no one over 54 watches the Grammys? Does he think they do not buy music albums or go to concerts? Does he think that only in Iowa people are outraged by Eminem’s lyrics and the recognition this rapper receives by just being nominated, let alone asked to perform? It’s one thing to be a rebel against the establishment, as I probably am considered by those who know me, it is another thing to promote violence with “obscenities and graphic sexual and violent images, along with lyrics viewed by many as misogynistic and anti-gay.”

I’m so incensed at his nomination, I’m not sure I will watch the Grammys this year. If he performs, I will definitely not be in the viewing audience.
