* David Heneker; Wrote Score for ‘Half a Sixpence’

David Heneker, 94, British lyricist who wrote the score for “Half a Sixpence” and other musicals. Heneker’s musical career began after World War II when he was a pianist in London clubs and recorded original songs. In 1958, he collaborated with Monty Norman on lyrics for “Expresso Bongo,” a satire on London lowlife. He then worked with Norman and Julian More on “Irma la Douce,” which was a hit in London’s West End. It became a Broadway hit in 1960 and three years later was made into a Billy Wilder film, starring Shirley MacLaine and Jack Lemmon. “Half a Sixpence” was first performed in 1965 and, when it reached Broadway, introduced American audiences to Tommy Steele. Heneker won three Ivor Novello awards, given to outstanding British songwriters and composers. On Tuesday near Cardigan, Wales, after a long illness.
