A Ventura man walking across the northbound lanes of the Ventura Freeway near Main Street in Ventura was struck and killed by a tow truck early Friday.

Officer Dave Webb of the California Highway Patrol said Robert Wayne Beckner, 51, was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics.

The driver, Christopher Rotundo, 29, of Ventura, was working for Double R Towing of Ventura and was not cited in the 12:35 a.m. incident, Webb said. The truck was traveling at about 45 mph, investigators said.

It was not known where Beckner entered the freeway or whether he was intoxicated, Webb said.

CHP officials said that between 1996 and 2000, nine other pedestrians died on the Ventura Freeway in Ventura County, while 26 people were injured while walking on the freeway.
