Sheriff’s deputies responding to a driver’s frantic early Friday morning cell phone call found the man’s passenger bleeding from a gunshot wound, officials said.

The driver was calling from Avenue M, between 10th Street West and the Antelope Valley Freeway, and seemed unfamiliar with the area. His passenger, a 38-year-old Palmdale man, had been shot in the chest, apparently at a bar on 35th Street East in Palmdale, Sheriff’s Homicide Det. Mike Scott said.

The passenger was taken to Antelope Valley Hospital, where he was listed in serious condition by hospital officials. The names of the men have not been released.

The California Highway Patrol took the emergency call and notified sheriff’s deputies in Lancaster. They were already on the scene about 12:45 a.m., when Palmdale sheriff’s detectives arrived.

A vehicle parked near the scene by an investigator was hit by a drunk driver, Sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Nelson said. The female driver was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence, he said.

Detectives, who were still investigating the shooting late Friday, said no one had been arrested.
