Eldredge’s Ankle Injury Will Require Week Off Ice

Tests performed Saturday on Todd Eldredge’s injured left ankle found a bruise and a cyst in the joint below his ankle, which will keep him off the ice about a week.

Mahlon Bradley, the U.S. figure skating team physician, said in a statement that an X-ray of Eldredge’s foot and an MRI exam on his ankle found a bruising of the talus bone and a cyst in the subtalar joint. The five-time U.S. figure skating champion will sit out next week’s Grand Prix Final in Tokyo but is expected to compete in the world championships next month in Vancouver, Canada.

Eldredge led the men’s field in the Four Continents championships after the short program, but withdrew before Friday’s long program at the Delta Center because of swelling and soreness in the ankle. He suffered the injury Wednesday in practice, when he jammed the foot while landing a jump. He had an injection to numb the ankle but decided it was unwise to risk additional damage.
