Lewis Leads Way for Pepperdine

Craig Lewis matched his career high with 20 points Saturday as Pepperdine defeated Santa Clara, 85-74, at Santa Clara.

Kelvin Gibbs, who leads the West Coast Conference in rebounding, recorded his eighth double-double of the season with 16 points and 11 rebounds.

David Lalazarian added 16 points as the Waves, 17-6 overall and 9-1 in conference play, won for the 11th time in 12 games, the last seven on the road. Brandon Armstrong, the WCC scoring leader, scored 15 points.

Steve Ross scored a career-high 19 points to lead Santa Clara (14-11, 6-4).

An 11-0 run, sparked by two three-point baskets by Ross, gave Santa Clara a 14-10 lead, but the Waves came back for a 36-34 halftime lead.

Pepperdine opened the second half with an 11-2 run to open a 47-36 lead on Boomer Brazzle’s basket with 16:45 to play.

The Waves took a 14-point advantage seven minutes later. Santa Clara responded with a 12-2 run and closed to 66-62 on Jones’ layup with 6:50 left.

Brian Jones, who finished with 16 points, also had seven assists to move into sole possession of second place on the Santa Clara assist list, 21 behind leader Steve Nash. Jones is 11 assists short of becoming the first player in WCC history to record 1,500 points, 500 rebounds and 500 assists.

Bronco forward Jamie Holmes, who scored a career-high 26 points in his last outing, was held scoreless for the first time in 65 games.
