Roy Williams knew sixth-ranked Kansas was looking past Baylor, so he told the Jayhawks to snap out of it before tipoff.

He told them again when they were down, 10-0. And again when they were down by 25 points at halftime.

The Jayhawks eventually got the message and rallied, but it wasn’t enough as Terry Black scored 20 points, many on rim-rattling dunks, to lead Baylor to an 85-77 victory Monday night at Waco, Texas, for the Bears’ first win in 11 years over a top-10 team.

“I don’t know that I’ve ever been part of a more complete breakdown,” said Williams, who missed his first chance to move into sole possession of second place on the school’s all-time victory list. “I talked to the team before the game, challenged them because I didn’t like the feel they gave me. You shouldn’t fear anybody, but you have to respect everyone you play.”

The Bears, 16-6 overall and 5-6 in the Big 12 Conference, gave the Jayhawks (19-4, 8-3) the biggest halftime deficit Williams has faced in his 13 years coaching Kansas. The Jayhawks got within four, but wound up losing to Baylor for the first time in seven games.

The Bears knew the Jayhawks didn’t respect them after leading scorer Kenny Gregory said he could handle Kansas’ two previous conference losses because “it’s not like we lost to [Texas] A&M; and Baylor.”

In savoring the victory, Black said: “It wasn’t like we beat Duke or North Carolina. It was only Kansas.”

Villanova 59, No. 18 Georgetown 56--Michael Bradley scored 24 points to lead the Wildcats (15-8, 6-5) over the Hoyas (19-5, 6-5) in a Big East game at Washington.

Villanova has won three in a row after a three-game losing streak. Georgetown, once ranked in the top 10, is 3-5 since starting 16-0.

Bradley made seven of 10 shots and nine of 12 free throws and also had eight rebounds and three steals. But he also had seven turnovers.

Gary Buchanan had eight turnovers, but he made a big three-point shot with 15 seconds to play, giving the Wildcats a 58-52 lead.

Then, with 4.6 seconds left, Buchanan missed a free throw, ending his Division I-record streak of consecutive made free throws at 73.

He made his second shot, however, and Georgetown’s Kevin Braswell missed a three-point shot at the buzzer.

OTHER GAME

Brigham Young 69, San Diego State 66--Trent Whiting and Mekeli Wesley each scored 21 points to lead the Cougars (17-7, 6-3) over the Aztecs (11-11, 1-8) in a Mountain West Conference game at San Diego.

WOMEN

No. 4 Duke 74, Georgia Tech 54--Iciss Tillis and Alana Beard each scored 17 points to lead the Blue Devils (22-2, 10-2) to an Atlantic Coast Conference victory over the Yellow Jackets (12-11, 3-9) at Atlanta.
