Smith, Titans Hold Off BYU
Winning pitcher Jon Smith struck out nine in eight innings to help Cal State Fullerton defeat Brigham Young, 2-1, Thursday at Goodwin Field.
Smith gave up eight hits and two walks and improved to 2-1. Kirk Saarloos pitched a 1-2-3 ninth to record his second save.
Louie Lamoure and Shawn Norris each drove in a run in the second for Fullerton (5-5).
The Titans had five consecutive singles in the second inning, including consecutive bunt hits by Kyle Boyer and Shane Costa. Lamoure’s infield singe drove home Mike Rouse, who had also singled, and that was followed by Norris’ single, which scored Boyer.
Brigham Young (6-5) scored in the first inning on a run-scoring single by Matt Carson, who was three for four. Norris had two hits and a walk for the Titans.
