An 86-year-old driver suffered major head injuries and broken bones Saturday afternoon after being thrown from his car in a collision near a Huntington Beach shopping center, police said.

John Genis of Costa Mesa was jettisoned out the passenger door of his Ford Taurus as the vehicle spun after being hit from the side, said Huntington Beach Police Lt. Ron Burgess. Genis was not wearing a seat belt when he crashed.

Genis was driving west on Adams Avenue near Brookhurst Street about 2 p.m. when he tried to turn left to reach a market but was hit by a Mercedes coming the other way, Burgess said.

“The passenger door popped open on impact and as the car was spinning, he was ejected,” Burgess said.

Genis was reported in critical condition at UCI Medical Center.

The driver of the Mercedes, Robert Loveless of Huntington Beach, was treated for moderate injuries at Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian, Burgess said.
