Ocean View Finishes Fast, Beats Tustin

Timely free-throw shooting down the stretch helped Ocean View defeat Tustin, 68-49, in a Golden West League boys’ basketball game Wednesday at Tustin.

The score was tied with five minutes remaining and the Seahawks led by only five with 2:30 left. But Ocean View, the county’s fourth-ranked team, made 11 of 15 free throws in the fourth quarter to put away the game. Matt Hatch, who finished with 11 points, was eight for eight from the line in the final quarter.

Marques Crane scored a game-high 22 points. Teammate Torin Beeler added 11 points and 10 rebounds for Ocean View (12-2, 1-0).

Senior guard Duane Nix scored 17 points and junior forward Ricky Miller had 10 points and nine rebounds for Tustin (6-10, 0-1).

In the Garden Grove League:

Pacifica 49, Garden Grove 39--Despite scoring only one point in the second quarter, host Pacifica (7-7, 1-0) was able to overcome a 23-18 halftime deficit to win in a league opener.

Kelly Gurnea led the second-half charge, scoring 13 of his 19 points.

In nonleague games:

Brea Olinda 87, Troy 58--Landon Lewis made four three-pointers and scored 22 points, Evan Moore had 16 points, Erik Giesler 15 and Ryan Moore 13 points and eight assists for host Brea Olinda (9-6).

Gary Chadha had 16 points and Nate Gilkes 15 for Troy (9-8).

Corona del Mar 64, El Monte 46--Idean Shahangian had 27 points and six steals and Matt Marston had 12 points and 11 rebounds for host Corona del Mar (6-10).

Costa Mesa 66, Orange 46--Chad Vakili (20 points), David Conte (18) and Steve Whittaker (12) connected on four three-pointers each for Costa Mesa.

Leading, 34-28, at halftime, the Mustangs went on a 10-1 run to start the second half and break open the game.

Cypress 63, Huntington Beach 46--Junior forward Matt Reid was 10 of 17 from the field and nine of 10 from the free-throw line, finishing with 30 points for the Centurions (9-6).

No. 3 El Toro 77, Servite 60--Ashkan Nazeri scored a career-high 34 points, including 15 in the fourth quarter, and Matt Reid added 17 points and eight rebounds for the Chargers (14-1).

Katella 77, Canyon 70--Marcus Espinosa scored 29 points and Phillip Tyson had 21 for host Katella (10-4).

Darren Putman scored 26 points for Canyon.

Laguna Hills 49, Fountain Valley 42--Jeff Sherman scored 19 points and Chris Lee made three three-pointers, finishing with 10 points for visiting Laguna Hills (12-5).

Mission Viejo 67, Aliso Niguel 60--Mykel Valentine and Travis Niesen each scored 17 points to lead host Mission Viejo (10-5).

Brandon Sievers scored 25 points for Aliso Niguel, which couldn’t overcome an 18-6 first-quarter deficit.

Santa Margarita 110, Whittier Pioneer 53--Thirteen players scored for Santa Margarita, ranked second in Orange County, had 13 players score. The Eagles were led by Lenny Collins with 21 points.

Western 58, Saddleback 42--Lavell Jones scored 26 points for the Pioneers (6-8), who led, 30-19, at halftime. Ismael Isais had 15 points for Saddleback (4-13).
