Golden West’s Lopez Signs With Northern Michigan
Golden West strong safety Enrique Lopez, the Rustlers’ lone selection on the Region IV all-state football team, has signed with Northern Michigan, Golden West Coach Mike Shaughnessy said Thursday.
Lopez, a sophomore who is 5 feet 11 and 195 pounds, led the Rustlers with six interceptions, most in the Mission Conference, and 85 tackles.
Northern Michigan, which plays in NCAA Division II, went 6-5 last season. Lopez, a graduate of Santiago High, will enroll Monday at Northern Michigan.
WOMEN’S BASKETBALL
Cal State Los Angeles forward Christa Ellis, a Los Alamitos High graduate, has been selected co-player of the week in the California Collegiate Athletic Assn.
Ellis, a 5-11 senior, has led the Golden Eagles (7-2, 3-1 in conference) to four consecutive victories, averaging 24.8 points and eight rebounds in those games.
BASEBALL
Long Beach State shortstop Bobby Crosby, a La Quinta High graduate, has been selected as a preseason All-American by Baseball America.
Crosby hit .348 with 10 home runs last season for the 49ers and hit .294 with 21 runs batted in this summer for Team USA.
