Players Named Scholar-Athletes

Nathan Terrazone, a Times’ All-Valley linebacker for St. Francis High, was among four seniors from the region selected scholar-athletes by the Pasadena/San Gabriel Valley chapter of the National Football Foundation and Hall of Fame.

Other selections included Chase Atkinson and Brian Shim of Flintridge Prep and Tyler Bettendorf of Crescenta Valley.

Criteria for selection included carrying a grade-point average of 3.2 or better and earning at least all-league recognition.

Thirty-three players from 30 schools will be honored at the 32nd scholar-athlete banquet on March 5 at Brookside Golf Club in Pasadena.

GOLF

* Colin Wilcox, a freshman at Camarillo, shot rounds of 71 and 75 to finish second last weekend in a national junior tournament at the Temecula Creek Inn. Wilcox finished two strokes behind Sean Harrington of Scottsdale, Ariz.

Sophomore Brandon Beck of Oak Park finished third and sophomore Jason Wilk of Westlake tied for fifth.

BOXING

* William Adamyan (1-0) of Glendale will fight Humberto Acosta (1-1) of North Hills in a welterweight bout as part of a three-bout professional card Feb. 9 at the Hilton Pasadena.

In the featured bout, Rodger Medal (14-2, seven knockouts) of Pasadena will meet Luis Lizarriga (25-12, 15 KOs) of Mexico in a super-featherweight match-up.

Lightweights Marcos Araruz (4-3, two KOs) and Adam Gonzalez (5-3, two KOs) will meet in the other bout.

The card is part of a “fight night” series promoted by Santa Clarita-based RW Promotions, which reportedly is in negotiations with a hotel and banquet hall in the San Fernando Valley to hold four additional shows in 2001.

BASKETBALL

* The Van Nuys/Reseda Elks Lodge will conduct its 29th annual free-throw shooting contest on Jan. 20 at Cleveland High.

Boys and girls 8-13 will compete in three age divisions. Each player gets 25 free throws, with winners advancing to district competition.
