Beach-Safety Notices to Expand
The Surfrider Foundation has received a $250,000 grant from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to develop a national beach water-quality public notification system.
“We hope this system will provide the public with the ability to know before they go,” Christopher J. Evans, executive director of Surfrider, said in a statement. “Before a beach user starts the car and makes the beach trek, they can now get quick and easy-to-use information about the safety of their ocean water at their favorite spot.”
The BEACH Information System is already available as an Internet site and telephone hot line serving San Diego County, with Orange County and San Francisco near completion. The grant will be used to expand the service for coastal communities nationwide.
Surfrider, based in San Clemente, is a nonprofit environmental group with 27,000 members.
The notification system is available at www.1800CLEANUP.org or (800) CLEANUP.
