The City Council has hired Gonzalez/Goodale Architects of Pasadena to design a $20-million civic center that will include a library, city hall and performing arts center, officials said.

Gonzalez/Goodale Architects has designed city hall projects for Westlake Village and Culver City, as well as a West Hollywood fire station.

The design of the nearly 52,000-square-foot project is expected to be completed this year, officials said. Construction should begin in April 2002 and be finished the following summer.

The City Council is working on plans to fund the project and is expected to hire a construction firm early next month, officials said.

The civic center will be built near The Commons at Calabasas shopping complex on more than seven acres. A pedestrian walkway will connect the center and the shopping complex, staff members said.

The existing City Hall is in a small office building on Mureau Road.
