California Gas Prices Fall for Third Week
California gasoline prices continued their steady recent decline, dipping to an average $1.859 for a gallon of self-serve regular in the week ended Monday.
The drop of 4.2 cents a gallon marked the third straight weekly decline reported by the U.S. Energy Information Administration. The California average remains 14.9 cents above that of a year ago, though it has fallen nearly a dime from the record high, unadjusted for inflation, of $1.954 set May 14.
The agency, in its weekly survey of 800 filling stations, reported that the average national price for self-serve regular fell 6.4 cents to $1.474.
The new figures here and across the country reflect the recent buildup in crude oil supplies and gasoline inventories. Prices are higher in California because of added costs and taxes related to the state’s strict environmental laws.
