A 19-year-old Fillmore man was seriously injured Monday when the car in which he was riding crashed, ejecting him through the front windshield, authorities said.

Eduardo Ceballos was airlifted to Simi Valley Hospital after the 3:30 p.m. crash on Grimes Canyon Road near Bardsdale Avenue, just south of Fillmore, said California Highway Patrol Officer Dave Webb.

Hospital authorities did not confirm Ceballos’ condition, but Webb described his injuries as serious. Ceballos wasn’t wearing a seat belt at the time of the crash and was found outside the vehicle on the shoulder of the road.

A preliminary investigation found that a mechanical problem occurred in the steering wheel, causing driver Rafael Tapia, 27, of Fillmore to lose control of his Ford Bronco and crash into a fence.

Three other passengers in the Bronco were wearing seat belts and were not injured.
