At Last, Expos on Roll

The Montreal Expos sure aren’t playing like a last-place team.

Orlando Cabrera and Jose Vidro each had three hits and Mike Thurman pitched seven solid innings Friday night as the Expos defeated the Atlanta Braves, 6-3, for their fourth consecutive victory, matching a season high.

“I’m really pleased with the way they’re playing, not only during this streak, but ever since I’ve been here,” Expo Manager Jeff Torborg said.

Torborg took over May 31 from the fired Felipe Alou, and the Expos are 22-22 since.

Cabrera drove in two runs and scored another, and Vidro scored three runs for the Expos, who ended the Braves’ three-game winning streak.

Atlanta starter Kevin Millwood (1-4), coming off the 60-day disabled list, went five innings and gave up seven hits and four runs--three earned. He walked three and struck out six.

The right-hander was making his first start since going on the disabled list May 7 because of a shoulder injury.

“I felt good physically,” Millwood said. “The first three innings I was pitching on nothing but adrenaline. After that I settled down and started pitching.”

He threw 105 pitches.
