The MetroStars appeared headed for a victory after a 25th-minute goal by Rodrigo Faria, but New England forward Johnny Torres was taken down in the penalty area by Richie Williams to set up the tying kick.

Cate beat goalkeeper Tim Howard with a high shot to the center of the net. It was Cate’s fourth goal of the season, three of which have been on penalty kicks.
