A 61-year-old Garden Grove man was shot and wounded Thursday as he confronted three men trying to break into his home, police said.

Police did not identify the man, citing concern for his safety, but said he was hospitalized in stable condition with a gunshot wound.

Garden Grove Police Lt. John Woods gave this account:

The man was inside his home on Stern Avenue just before noon, when he saw three men in the backyard near a sliding door. When they tried to enter the house, the homeowner struggled with them and was shot. The man’s wife and their three grandchildren went out another door and called for help. The men jumped over the backyard wall and fled.
