Prison Guard Attacked by Inmate Is Out of Coma
A guard at High Desert State Prison has come out of a coma caused by multiple skull fractures suffered during an inmate attack, prison officials said Tuesday.
Officer Karen Fobes, 43, remained in critical but stable condition in the intensive care unit at Washoe Medical Center in Reno. However, swelling in her brain had eased, and she was responding to questions and physical stimulus, said Youth and Adult Correctional Agency spokesman Steve Green.
Fobes was flown to the hospital after an inmate knocked her to the floor and stomped onher face Sunday afternoon as she was escorting him back to his cell from the shower, officials said.
Two guards suffered minor injuries when they were attacked by a second inmate as they came to Fobes’ assistance, officials said. Neither inmate required medical treatment; both were transferred Monday to Pelican Bay State Prison near Crescent City while the investigation continues.
