Times’ All-Sports Award 2000-2001 Final

Esperanza’s run through the spring playoffs, including a Southern Section championship in a boys’ golf regional and a runner-up finish in softball, sent the Aztecs to the top of the large-school division of The Times’ Orange County All-Sports Award.

It marks the first All-Sports Award title for the Aztecs, who were in seventh place after the fall and winter seasons. University, which led heading into the spring campaign, finished a close second.

Santa Margarita parlayed a strong spring season by its boys’ teams into its second consecutive small-school title, overcoming Corona del Mar for the second year in a row. The Eagles, who have won five All-Sports titles in the past six years, won section titles this spring in boys’ golf and volleyball and finished second at the boys’ swimming and track and field section finals.

The All-Sports award rewards county schools that have the most successful overall athletic programs. The scoring format awards points for a team’s playoff participation and finish.

Under the format, 20 points are awarded for winning a section title, 16 for finishing as a runner-up, 12 for reaching the semifinals, eight for reaching the quarterfinals and four for qualifying for the playoffs, wild-card berths included. No points are awarded for state playoff participation or individual competitions.

The cutoff point to determine large- and small-school categories was 2,000 students, excluding freshmen. Enrollment figures are based on those published in the Southern Section’s 2000-01 Directory of Member Schools.
