Galaxy Falters, Winds Up Tied

Diego Serna scored with 10 minutes remaining to help Miami salvage a 3-3 tie with the Galaxy on Saturday night, extending the Fusion’s home unbeaten streak to 10 games in front of 11,846 at Fort Lauderdale, Fla.

Miami (10-1-2), trailing by two goals at halftime, tied the match on second-half goals by Jim Rooney, in the 53rd minute, and Serna.

Rooney scored on a header off a crossing pass from Chris Henderson, cutting Miami’s deficit to 3-2.

Serna took a touch pass from Rooney, eluded Galaxy defender Peter Vagenas and scored just inside the left post from 18 yards.

Serna, who has scored seven goals in his last three matches, gave Miami a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute. A pass by Fusion midfielder Ian Bishop grazed Serna’s head and went into the Galaxy goal.

The Galaxy (6-4-4) scored three goals in the final 35 minutes of the first half.

Alexi Lalas’ header from inside the six-yard box in the 27th minute tied the score at 1-1.

The Galaxy moved out to a 2-1 lead on an own goal by Bishop in the 35th minute. Bishop deflected Paul Caligiuri’s free kick into the Fusion net.

Mauricio Cienfuegos scored from 15 yards in the 45th minute. Cobi Jones set up the goal with an uncontested run past the Miami backline and delivered a centering pass to Cienfuegos.

World Cup qualifying commitments forced the Galaxy to play without Luis Hernandez (Mexico) and Simon Elliott (New Zealand).

San Jose 0, New York/New Jersey 0--The Earthquakes extended their team-record unbeaten streak to 10 games with a tie in front of 23,261 at East Rutherford, N.J.

Neither Earthquake goalkeeper Joe Cannon nor MetroStar counterpart Tim Howard was seriously tested on a humid night at Giants Stadium as San Jose improved to 6-0-4 in its last 10 games.

Cannon had four saves. Howard finished with five.

Washington 3, Kansas City 0--Santino Quaranta scored two goals in front of 11,083 at Kansas City, Mo., as D.C. United won its second consecutive game.

Abdul Thompson-Conteh opened the scoring for United in the 53rd minute when he scored on a header off a pass from Chris Albright.

Quaranta scored in the 55th and 63rd minute for the United (5-7-0).

Dallas 6, Colorado 3--Joselito Vaca had a goal and an assist as the Burn extended the Rapids’ winless streak to seven games in front of 12,652 at Denver.

Ryan Suarez, Paul Broome and Aleksey Korol also scored for the Burn, which scored a team-record six goals and benefited from two own goals by Colorado.

Raul Diaz Arce had two goals and Marcelo Balboa also scored for the Rapids (2-8-3), who last won on May 12.

Columbus 6, Tampa Bay 1--Dante Washington had three goals and two assists as the Crew extended the Mutiny’s losing streak to seven in front of 19,128 at Columbus, Ohio.

Jeff Cunningham scored two goals and John Harkes also scored for the Crew (3-4-4), which set a team record for goals in a game. Cunningham also had two assists.

Tampa Bay’s Carlos Valderrama was ejected in the 12th minute for spitting at Harkes after a hard tackle at midfield, forcing the Mutiny to play a man down for most of the game. Valderrama was given a red card May 26 for spitting on Miami’s Bishop.

Boston 1, Washington 0--Kristine Lilly scored in the second half to lead the Breakers to a victory over the Freedom in front of 11,583 at Boston.

Lilly scored on a long feed from Allison Kemp, gathering the pass at the top of the box and beating Freedom goalkeeper Siri Mullinix to her left.
