Noon Festival

This weekend the Queen Mary Events Park in Long Beach will again be bursting with the celebratory sounds of Cajun music and the inviting smell of Cajun food. Visitors will be able to feast on such regional favorites as crawfish, jambalaya, gumbo and alligator at the Long Beach Bayou Festival. At the same time, participants will be treated to the sounds of Cajun musicians such as Geno Delafose & French Rockin’ Boogie and Sheryl Cormier & Cajun Sound. After its daring experiment last year, when it actually presented a female performer, KROQ’s ninth annual Weenie Roast dispenses with the tokenism and turns everything over to the boys. The Cult, Coldplay and Jane’s Addiction might be expected to drop some spots of sensitivity into the proceedings, but fans will be bracing for the roar of such heavy hitters as Blink-182, Disturbed, Papa Roach and Staind, to name a few. The fourth annual Jazz Mentorship Program Jazz and Blues Festival in Leimert Park Village will feature performances by singer-guitarist Ray Bailey, singer Mickey Champion, singer Carmen Bradford, bassist Nedra Wheeler, singer Ernie Andrews with the Isaac Smith Big Band and many others. Pianist-vocalist-composer Nellie Lutcher will receive this year’s JMP Living Museum Award for her contributions to L.A.’s musical heritage. “Riffs for Billy Higgins,” a tribute to the late jazz great featuring the George Bohanon Sextet, will be hosted by Kamau Daa’ood.
