Dancing Delight

I attended the Silayan Dance Company’s performance of “Mother Night” at the L.A. Theatre Center. It was an original “dance drama” written, choreographed and directed by Dulce Capadocia in honor of her mother, Ascuncion, the venerated founder of the company who died recently after a long illness.

I found the performance to be a profoundly moving experience. The audience was stunned by what they were witnessing and at the show’s conclusion gave Capadocia and her company an extended standing ovation.

I was surprised to read Lewis Segal’s not entirely unfavorable but somewhat tepid review (“Tour De Force ‘Orlando’ Conveys Potent Theme,” June 18). Though he’s a writer working with words, I couldn’t quite understand him. Though she’s a choreographer working with movement and symbolism, I could understand Capadocia perfectly.
