Summer in the desert? Not a cool proposition until you look at the hotel rates, often a fraction of the winter tabs. Throw in a swimming pool, and you may have a deal. An example is the luxury La Quinta Resort & Club in La Quinta, southeast of Palm Springs, which charges $99 per night for standard rooms through Sept. 5 under its “Family Fun Freedom Package.” Published rates for the same rooms are $340 during the winter high season. The summer package includes 25% off a second room for children, 50% off the resort’s children’s day camp program and a free child’s meal (up to age 11) for every one purchased by an adult. On Friday and Saturday nights, “dive-in” movies (family films shown poolside while children float in the pool) are included. The deal is subject to availability.
