Bruised Left Knee Keeps Selanne Out of Lineup

Right wing Teemu Selanne was sidelined for a second consecutive game because of what has been termed “a bruised left knee” by team officials.

Selanne, who rode a stationary bicycle Friday, said he hoped to go for a light skate before his teammates practice today. His status for Sunday’s game against the Kings is “probable,” according to a team spokesman. Selanne has been sidelined since Sunday’s loss to the Columbus Blue Jackets.

“Every day it’s getting better and better,” said Selanne, the Ducks’ leading scorer with 25 goals and 56 points. “It felt good. I think I’ll try to skate before the rest of the guys. I rode the bike and felt good. There was a lot of improvement.”

Coach Guy Charron said Monday and Tuesday that Selanne was “under the weather” and could not practice. Selanne said he had “the flu,” but felt better by Wednesday.

Defenseman Niclas Havelid, who last month underwent surgery to repair the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee, said his rehabilitation is on schedule. “It’s boring,” he said. “It’s unbelievable. It’s tough to sit out, but I want to be around the team.”

Havelid has no plans to return to his native Sweden in the off-season. He said he will continue to work with a physical therapist in Newport Beach. He expects to be off the ice for four months.
