Westlake Wins With Lucky 13 in the Sixth

Westlake High, the top-ranked baseball team in the region in The Times’ preseason poll, scored 13 runs in the sixth inning Saturday en route to a 14-5 victory over Valencia in a San Fernando Valley tournament game at Valencia.

Luke Riordan hit a grand slam and Tyler Carr had two hits in the sixth, when Westlake (2-0) sent up 18 batters.

Richie Martin hit a three-run home run in the first inning for Valencia (1-1) and shut out the Warriors for five innings. Ryan McCarthy struck out four in the final two innings for Westlake.

In other San Fernando Valley tournament games:

Lancaster 10, Chaminade 7--Transfers Jordy Carlon and Art Ortiz played key roles for Lancaster at Chaminade.

Carlon, a transfer from Antelope Valley, had four hits, drove in two runs and scored once. Ortiz, a transfer from Palmdale, hit a three-run home run in the fifth that gave No. 8 Lancaster (2-0) a 5-3 lead.

Granada Hills 3, Poly 2--Scott Rapkin singled in pinch-runner Guillermo Garcia in the seventh inning for the Highlanders (2-0) at Granada Hills.

Jon Beal allowed four hits, struck out six and walked two in six innings, and Bobby Baca got the victory for Granada Hills. Joe Hampel hit a two-run home run in the fifth for Poly (0-1-1).

El Camino Real 15, Marshall 3--Christian Hariot hit a grand slam and was one of five Conquistadores (1-1) to collect two hits in a victory at Marshall.

Calabasas 4, Notre Dame 0--Justin Segal (1-0) threw a two-hitter, striking out nine and walking three, for the host Coyotes.

Segal, batting leadoff, singled, walked, stole two bases, scored two runs and drove in one for Calabasas (1-1).

Quartz Hill 13, Montclair Prep 2--Andy Locke had four hits, including a two-run triple and two-run double, and five runs batted in for the host Rebels (1-1).

Brian Chavez drove in four runs on three hits, including a double.

Birmingham 6, Grant 5--Jose Carrillo hit a two-run home run in the seventh inning to lift Birmingham (1-1) at Grant (1-1). Lucio Tapia had two hits and two RBIs for Birmingham.

Larry Brown had two hits and Moises Saldivar drove in two runs for Grant (1-1).

Palmdale 2, Harvard-Westlake 0--Left-hander Dana Eveland pitched five innings of no-hit ball with five strikeouts and one walk, combining with three pitchers on a no-hitter for Palmdale (2-0) at Franklin Field in Encino.

St. Francis 7, Thousand Oaks 5--Matt McColgan hit a two-run home run and Marty Marquardt had a two-run single as the visiting Golden Knights (2-0) scored four runs in the seventh to rally from a 4-3 deficit against the Lancers (0-2).

In the Westside tournament:

Sylmar 5, Rio Mesa 2--Jesus Martinez hit two run-scoring doubles and finished with three hits for Sylmar (2-0) at Rio Mesa. Mike Garcia pitched six strong innings and Brian Tabura hit a two-run home run for Sylmar.

Chatsworth 22, Palisades 1--Danny Dominguez hit a three-run home run and Jon Selman had three hits for host Chatsworth (2-0).

Camarillo 3, Moorpark 2--Delmon Young scored on a passed ball in the ninth inning to give the Scorpions (2-0) a victory at Camarillo. Young struck out 12 and allowed four hits in seven innings.

Danny Buckley allowed two runs and five hits in seven innings for Moorpark (0-2), which got two hits from Blake Sharpe.

Royal 4, Canyon 3--Nick Jewell’s sacrifice fly drove in the last of four fifth-inning runs for the host Highlanders (2-0).

Ryan Keys and Brian Gunn each had two hits for Royal and Dan Fischer (1-0) allowed five hits, one earned run and three walks in six innings.

Hart 15, Bishop Montgomery 7--Chris Giordano had two hits and five RBIs for host Hart (2-0).

San Fernando 6, Venice 2--Abraham Gonzalez (1-0) gave up three hits, struck out five and allowed one earned run in six innings for visiting San Fernando (2-0).

Buena 6, L.A. University 1--Jason Plum pitched a complete game with four strikeouts and one walk and hit a solo home run in the fifth inning for the host Bulldogs (1-0-1).

Hueneme 9, Westchester 3--Jaime Martinez and Mike Minjares had two hits each for host Hueneme (2-0) and Chris Camacho struck out eight in six innings.

In the El Segundo tournament:

West Torrance 4, Simi Valley 2--Junior third baseman Tim Wojcik hit a two-run homer, but the host Pioneers (1-1) lost to one of the top teams in the state.

Alemany 9, Redondo Union 1--Junior right-hander A.J. Anthony allowed no runs on one hit in six innings for the host Indians (2-0). Mike Strazzeri and Nick Petrucci homered for Alemany.

Crespi 8, Banning 4--Jonathan Oller had three hits, drove in two runs and pitched an inning of relief, striking out two, for Crespi (2-0) at Valley College.

SOFTBALL

Agoura 1, Highland 0--Lindsay Sumpes (2-0) pitched a no-hitter and struck out four in a nine-inning pool-play game of the Hart tournament at Santa Clarita Central Park. Jamie Kogler’s sacrifice fly drove in Michelle Smith in the bottom of the ninth.

Thousand Oaks 2, El Camino Real 1--Lindsey Johnson singled in the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the sixth inning of a pool-play game of the Hart tournament that was called because of a time limit.

Nicole Angelo (1-0) threw a three-hitter, with seven strikeouts and three walks for the Lancers (2-0), which defeated Granada Hills, 9-0, earlier.

Simi Valley 6, Buena 0--Sophomore Mandy Kilionski struck out 14 and pitched a one-hitter, and Nicole Brazier and Nicole Gutierrez contributed two hits apiece for the Pioneers in an opening game of the Simi Valley tournament.

Crescenta Valley 9, Paramount 0--Meredith Cervenka struck out 13 in a four-hitter and six players drove in one run each for Crescenta Valley (1-0) in a Downey tournament second-round game.
